A Family Collection of Fabric Collage Freehand Quilts: Artist's Statement
I first started quilting on a whim when we lived in our Market Street apartment in Portsmouth, NH. Home during the late winter months awaiting the season to start of Star Island, I noticed an ad for a quilting class at the fabric store just down from our place. The words, "no quilting experience required" and "using a cut and paste method" appealed to me immediately.
I made it through the first of that weekend class surrounded by by experienced quilters who were somewhat dubious about our teacher's exhortations to "Have fun! Plunk down that fabric and use your imaginations." As for me, I was in terror of being discovered as a sewing imposter.
The teacher, Susan Carlson, artist and quilter, was the reason I stuck with it. She asked us to bring a photo that we loved and that photo subject was to be our inspiration.
