June 19th commemorates Juneteenth, a day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas finally learned of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

On June 17, 2021 President Joe Biden signed the bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday, the first since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was designated in 1983.

Juneteenth represents not just the end of slavery in a specific place, but a broader reminder of delayed justice and the importance of awareness. I appreciate how it also mentions the recognition of the day as a federal holiday, which shows progress in acknowledging that history. It makes me reflect more deeply, even during everyday moments when I might be relaxing or doing something casual like playing Veck IO, that learning and remembering events like this truly matters.
